Start by copying down the kick MIDI, or try playing your bass sound like it’s a kick drum. After all, it should mirror your kick, maybe even exactly. As an example, here’s the bass line from Future’s “First Off.” Inspiration may strike like lightning, but just about as frequently, so go out and find your own stories, ideas, characters, and narratives in these blogs! It is real easy to mess up an entire mix with too much processing — in particular, mix buss compression. Over the years of searching the internet creeping on my favorite mixers’ (Jacquire King, Dave Pensado, Chris Lord-Alge, and many more) mix buss compression settings, I’ve found that a little goes a long way. In order to do so, we must rely on what we said before — moving fret by fret towards the body of the guitar will give us sharps (♯). On the 6th string, for example, we will get: E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B,…

We usually expect the energy to be at peak level in the chorus, but the matter of what “peak level” actually means is open for debate. In most cases, the chorus or drop sections will be the loudest parts of the song, but there are some producers out there who play with our emotions every now and then, and delay that ultimate satisfaction. You might want to go with the approach of creating a very busy pre-chorus that can potentially lead to an even busier chorus, but then leave listeners with a minimalist, stripped-down chorus which somehow counterintuitively hits really…

If you lose your sanity as a musician — especially when music isn’t your full-time career — everything else goes down the drain. The whole thing relies on you taking care of yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. We are all involved with music in different ways — some of us play the piano, the flute, the bass guitar, drums, one is DJ in his spare time, one is a label manager. And some of the staff here do not play instruments themselves but have strong, deep connections with music. Above all else, we are all real diggers. Every member of our staff…

If you waited around for inspiration to strike you, you’d have to watch each pitch opportunity, co-write, and artist session pass you by in the dark until that light bulb in your head finally turns on. That’s not a very effective way to make a living off of your craft, is it? Instead of hyper-focusing on your total stream count, pay attention to actionable metrics, which help you make data-backed decisions that actually have an impact on your music career growth. Specifically, this can include things like how engaged your followers are, which demographics are most engaged, and which tracks are…

The body art style is itself distinctive, and helps to convey the melancholic yet hopeful vibe of the song. This reflects on Gotye’s authentic lyricism as he is stripped away of his clothes, but it also makes a slightly less playful reference to the style of Peter Gabriel’s video for “Sledgehammer.” (more…)

Popular music’s journeys via the variety of entertainment platforms built to allow it to reach vast audiences greater than any one nation could contain have shaped the way trends arise, thrive, and inevitably wane. Whether through special-event appearances, music videos, soundtracks, or entire channels (once) dedicated to the artform, television has always been one of the biggest proponents of these cultural progressions. Some moments in particular have stuck out from the ordinary and had a greater influence or made a longer lasting impression on us than others. Found Sound Nation leverages mobile technology to create opportunities for youth and underrepresented…
